“NORMAL”
This word intrigues me very much! The dictionary definition of normal is “conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.” We can use it in many contexts but everyone is different, and everyone looks at it in a different way. Some people relate normal to freedom, but what they do with the freedom is important. In my perspective, life can never be normal, there are always bumps and potholes. A ‘normal’ day will never be remembered, it will be insignificant to your life. Think about it, use the next 30 seconds to think back and spot a day which was ‘normal’. Yes, I do agree, we CAN have a ‘normal’ to identify something that is not normal. We can use this diagram to visualize this-
If someone drinks milk like a cat, you could consider that as the ‘Abnormal’ line, but you could say that only because you know the ‘conventional normal’ of how we drink milk.
In another context, in online classes, due to Covid, people keep telling us “when things get back to normal, we will…” This honestly makes no sense to me. It is equivalent to saying “we will never do …” The old definition of normal, especially in public spaces are gone, over, no more! Even if they tell us that it is not necessary to wear masks or that everyone is immune to Covid (obviously in the future, not anytime soon), someone or the other is going to wear mask and will inevitably come to school in a plastic suit. It is a fact! And I would not consider that as ‘normal’ in my books.
There you go, NORMAL in my perspective.
